This Summers Jaw-Dropping Movie Line-up
What could Robert Downy Jr. and Chris Hemsworth being super hero’s, a story about someone with our 3rd presidents name hunting vampires, a Spider-Man who isn’t Toby McGuire and Christian Bale dressing up like a bat all have in common? Well, these are just a few of the large quantity of movies that will be hitting the theaters this summer. The better question to be asking about these is which ones will make a killing at the box office and which ones will people either hardly hear about or care so little about that they won’t waste their time even considering them? When the sun is out and people want nothing more than to be in a nice cool movie theater, the best way to make this happen is to create movies that will draw the most people in. Although there seem to be a lot of good movies coming out this summer, there also seems to be a lot of duds just from their titles.
Some of the movies that people should be keeping a look out for include “The Avengers”, “The Amazing Spider-Man”, “The Dark Knight Rises”, “The Expendables 2” and “Ted”.
One movie that has been talked about since the Iron Man movies hit theaters has been “The Avengers”. Connecting the hero’s from Iron Man, Thor, The Incredible Hulk, and Captain America, this movie is one that is expected to draw some of the biggest crowds to the theaters in May. At the end of each of the hero’s movies, they have had an additional scene at the end of the credits that has been hinting at the coming of this monumental movie. Samuel L. Jackson plays Nick Fury who, with the help of the S.H.I.E.L.D. agency, has brought these individual heroes together to save the earth from Loki (the villain from Thor) and his various membered army. This is expected to draw fans of the different movies and comic books alike as this movie has been long awaited. The movie was released on May 4th, but is still a movie that many moviegoers have been eagerly awaiting. This movie is rated PG-13 for intense sequences of sci-fi violence and action throughout, and mild drug references.
The Amazing Spider-Man
Back in 2002, we were all introduced to Tobey Maguire as he portrayed the characters of Peter Parker and his alter ego Spider-Man. After this first movie was such a success, sequels were released in 2004 and 2007. It is now 2012 and Tobey Maguire will not be returning as these characters in the newest installment titled “The Amazing Spider-Man”. Andrew Garfield plays the lead character, or characters, this time around. There is also a new leading lady in this story of Spider-Man, both in her character and the woman playing her. Emma Stone plays the female lead and her characters name is Gwen Stacy. Some other note worthy names include Martin Sheen as Ben Parker, Sally Fields as May Parker, Stan Lee making an appearance as he did in each of the first three Spider-Man movies and Rhys Ifans as the villain The Lizard (a.k.a. Dr. Curt Connors). In this installment of Spider-Man, Peter Parker finds a clue that could potentially help him figure out why his parents disappeared when he was younger. In his search, he is set on a collision course with Dr. Curt Connors, who was his father’s former partner. “The Amazing Spider-Man” is scheduled to hit theaters July 3rd and this film is not yet rated.
The Dark Knight Rises
Back in the summer of 2008, patrons were mesmerized as the highly anticipated sequel to “Batman Begins” came out with a lot of buzz coming from Heath Ledger’s amazing performance as Batman’s nemesis The Joker. It is now four years since the Dark Knight has appeared on the big screen, but our hero returns in an attempt to go out with a bang in “The Dark Knight Rises”. Christian Bale returns in the lead role as both Bruce Wayne and Batman, but is now up against a new villain, Bane, played by Tom Hardy. Bale will also have a new co-star this time around as Anne Hathaway will be playing Catwoman. Other notable names in the movie include the return of Gary Oldman as Jim Gordon, Morgan Freeman as Lucius Fox, Michael Caine as Alfred and Liam Neeson makes his mark by playing the role of Ra’s Al Ghul. In this third and final installment of the series, it has been eight years since Batman took the fall for Two Face’s crimes, and a new terrorist leader, Bane has overwhelmed Gotham’s finest. The Dark Knight must then resurface in order to protect a city that has branded him an enemy. The movie will be released July 20th and is rated PG-13 for intense sequences of violence and action and some sensuality and language.
The Expendables 2
Two years ago, “The Expendables” hit the big screen with it’s all star cast of well known tough guys. The first was such a success that you just had to know another one would be coming eventually. Eventually has come. The cast of tough guys returns for another go around, as they will also be accompanied by some new faces in “The Expendables 2”. Join the cast in this sequel will be Jean-Claude van Damme, Chuck Norris, Scott Adkins and technically Arnold Schwarzenegger as he wasn’t really in the original much. You will have returning performances from Bruce Willis, Liam Hemsworth, Jason Statham, Jet Li, Dolph Lundgren, Terry Crews, Randy Couture and Sylvester Stallone. In this sequel, Mr. Church (Willis) reunites the Expendables for what is expected to be an easy paycheck, but when one of their men is murdered on the job, their quest for revenge puts them deep in enemy territory and up against an unexpected threat. The movie will be in theaters on August 17th and there is still some controversy on whether it will be rated PG-13 or R.
We have all, at one time or another had a stuffed animal that we treasured and loved with all our hearts as these were usually our first friends in the world. Now thanks to director Seth MacFarlane, the idea of this is finally being brought to life. If you are familiar with MacFarlane’s style of comedy, than you probably have a good idea of what kind of movie you will have here in “Ted”. Mark Wahlberg and Mila Kunis play the lead roles with MacFarlane providing the voice of the title character. The movie is about a man (Wahlberg) and his teddy bear (MacFarlane), who comes to life as the result of a childhood wish. The two grow up together and remain friends through the years. When Lori (Kunis) comes into John’s (Wahlberg) life, he has to dealing with both her and Ted and potentially having to make a choice between the two. The movie is scheduled to come out July 13th and is rated R for crude and sexual content, pervasive language and some drug use.
Along with these potential hits at the box office comes a collections of movies that are up in the air as to whether they will be successful or not. Some movies that will be coming out this summer that you may or may not want to see include “Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter”, “Men in Black 3”, “G.I. Joe: Retaliation”, “Rock of Ages” and “Battleship”.
Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter
One of those movies that could be a dud is a movie by the title of “Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter”. If you are not already offended by the title, wait until you hear the storyline. It appears that President Lincoln’s mother has been murdered by a supernatural creature and this, for some reason, has fueled Mr. Lincoln to destroy vampires and their “slave-owning helpers”. Now why didn’t I ever read anything about this when I learned about President Lincoln in my history classes? That’s because this never happened and just as well might be something that should not be happening on the big screen. The movies cast is filled with people you’ve never heard of such as Benjamin Walker (Abraham Lincoln), Rufus Sewell and Dominic Cooper. This movie hits theaters June 22nd and is not yet rated.
Men in Black 3
The first two Men in Black movies were a big hit at the box office, but this third movie in the series is one that may be kind of iffy. In “Men in Black 3”, you have the return of Will Smith as Agent J, Tommy Lee Jones as Agent K and Josh Brolin as Agent K. That’s right, Brolin will be playing the same role as Jones but will be portraying his characters younger self. In this third Men in Black movie, Agent J (Smith) travels back in time to M.I.B.’s early years in the 1960s, in an attempt to stop an alien from assassinating his friend Agent K and changing history. Hence why you have an older and younger version of Agent K. There will also be performances by Bill Hader and Lady Gaga in the movie. The movie will be released May 25th and is currently not rated.
G.I. Joe: Retaliation
“G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra” came out late in the summer of 2009 and has since been absent from the big screen. It is 2012 and the G.I. Joe franchise continues with this its newest movie G.I. Joe: Retaliation. With a new movie comes a number of new faces to the series. Actors like Channing Tatum, Dwayne Johnson and Bruce Willis spice up the cast in this sequel. Also new to this movie is Adrianne Palicki who plays Lady Jaye. The story line for this one is that Cobra spy Zartan (played by Arnold Vosloo) has most of the Joes assassinated forcing the remaining Joes (Tatum, Johnson, Willis and Palicki) to band together and strike back. Returning from the original are Ray Park as Snake Eyes, Jonathan Pryce as the U.S. President and Elodie Yung as Jinx. This movie will be in theaters June 29th and is currently not rated.
Rock of Ages
It is safe to say that many people have heard the song “Rock of Ages” by Def Leppard. But can anyone say that they ever thought or even imaged this famous song becoming a movie? Well this has now happened and will have an all-star cast to make it come to life. A few of the big names within the cast include Diego Boneta, Julianne Hough, Catherine Zeta-Jones, Alec Baldwin, Russell Brand, Will Forte, and Tom Cruise as rocker Stacee Jaxx. The movie is set in 1987 Los Angeles, it follows Drew (Boneta) and Sherrie (Hough) who are two young people chasing their dreams in the big city. When they meet, it appears to be love at first sight, but their romance is in for a series of challenges. To go along with it’s all-star cast, Rock of Ages will also incorporate music from Foreigner, Journey, Poison, Twisted Sister, Bon Jovi and of course Def Leppard (considering the movie is titled after one of their hit songs). The movie is scheduled to be released on June 15th of this year and is not yet rated.
With the number of movie ideas becoming more and more scarce, Hollywood has begun looking elsewhere for its movie plots. With that, the day has finally come where a beloved children’s game has been turned into a full-length motion picture. That child’s game turned movie is “Battleship”. The cast for the movie is not as star filled as most others but it does have a few names people will recognize. The movie stars Alexander Skarsgard, Brooklyn Decker, Liam Neeson and even Rihanna. The storyline of the movie focuses on a fleet of ships who are forced to do battle with an army of unknown beings in order to stop the destruction that is being done to our planet. The movie is set to be released on May 18th and is rated PG-13 for intense sequences of violence, action and destruction and language.
This is just a short list of the many movies that will be coming to theaters this summer. And as if the summer doesn’t look good enough for movie-goers, the ladder part of the year might be just as good. In September, you’ll be able to see “Resident Evil: Retribution”, and in October “Paranormal Activity 4” is said to be hitting theaters. November looks to be a busy month for movie-goers as the “Red Dawn” remake will be in theaters along with “Skyfall”, the next installment in the 007 series, and “The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn – Part 2”. The year will come to an exciting end in December with “The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey”, and the remake of “Les Miserables” with Hugh Jackman as Jean Valjean and Russel Crowe as Inspector Javert. Lastly, on Christmas Day, Leonardo DiCaprio will be back on the big screen in yet another iconic role as he plays the lead character in “The Great Gatsby”.
For what has already been another great year at the movies, some might say the best is yet to come.
